An Interview with Schannon Y. “That Tile Chick”

What inspired you to get into tile setting and DIY?

I always loved doing projects. Envisioning the finished product and making it happen. The constant challenges it brings keeps my attention and brings me back for more as it fills my need for accomplishment.

What professional skills do you use in your day-to-day most?

Problem solving. No two projects are ever the same and there is always a hurdle or issue that needs to be addressed. I really learned to keep my cool and not let small things hinder my progress.

How do you inspire more women to get into tile setting and DIY/design/build?

I like to share my journey. Not just with my finished product but my lifestyle as well. I really think staying relatable and showing a positive overall life leads people to feel more comfortable taking on a blue collar career. It’s not about what you do for money, it’s what you do with the money you make that makes a difference.

What skill are you excited to learn next?

I am excited to learn more about welding. I went to a welding school and learned the basics of stick welding and it’s definitely one of those addicting skills that keeps you wanting to learn more.

What projects are you taking on in your own time?

I want to invest in real estate for retirement. So everything from small remodels to big projects with many moving parts.

What’s in your toolbox that you can’t live without?

I can’t live without my Fein Multimaster multitool. It’s universal and reliable.

What tools do you think every household should have?

Drill/driver, Tape measure, and multitool.

How do you spend your time when you’re not on the job?

In my freetime I am either hanging out with my dogs or at the gym.

Who do you want to shout out? Another woman in the trade

Anna – The Plumbing Princess. She is kind, hardworking, and an inspiration to me.
