An Interview with Amy Ecklund

What inspired you to become a general contractor?

I morphed into being a GC from being a handy(wo)man first.  As the business grew and we faced the struggles of finding skilled handypeople we changed directions into the remodeling arena.

What professional skill do you use in your day-to-day most?

Managing people and leadership.

How do you inspire more women and queer folks to get into the trades?

Being a presence in the local industry and community.

What skills are you excited to learn next?

Real estate development for co-housing from finding a piece of property to feasibility to design and construction to families moving in.

What projects are you taking on in your own time? Do you DIY at home?

I’m gearing up to build a small cabin on a piece of property my wife and I own.  I do DIY at home but not much.  I don’t own the house I live in so I’m a little tied by what I can do.

What’s in your toolbox that you can’t live without?

Utility knife with blade storage and multi-bit screwdriver.

How do you spend your time when you’re not on the job?

Outside as much as I can be it hiking, biking, gardening, or just going to the dog park.

Anyone you want to shout out?

Louise Hansen of Weezee’s Plumbing.  She’s badass through and through.
