How to Change a Toilet Flapper

We tapped MBuild Pro Carly Carey to share her (super simple!) step-by-step instructions for changing a toilet flapper.

What’s a Flapper

The flapper‘s job is to create a seal that keeps the water in the tank until you pull the lever to flush. The easiest way to tell if you need a new flapper? When the toilet is constantly running!

Instructions

Step 1

Take a photo of the current flapper and head to the hardware store so you can be sure you get the right size and shape!

Step 2

Turn off the water to the toilet by turning the water valve clockwise. Flush to release any water left in the tank.

Step 3

Disconnect the chain that links the flush lever to the flapper. Unhook the flapper from the two mount pegs that are holding it in place.

Step 4

Connect the new flapper to the two mount pegs, positioning it over the drain. Connect the new chain to the flush lever.

Step 5

Try the flush lever to make sure the new flapper has the correct range of motion; you may need to adjust the chain connection.
